Parents now introducing their daughters to prostitution: MP Says
Naivasha MP John Kihagi has attributed the increase in prostitution in the area to parents forcing their daughters to become sex workers.
Speaking to the press in the constituency, Mr Kihagi yesterday said that some mothers in the area had become ‘notorious’ and were now sending their daughters to the streets to boost the family earnings.
“Majority of the young girls in the area are being forced into the streets by their parents instead of seeking education,” said the Naivasha legislator.
“The numbers have shot up and we have noticed a trend whereby children of sex workers are forced and even threatened by their mothers to join the profession,” he added.
Kihagi attributed the poor performance of KCPE in the 2013 examinations to the trend, saying that majority of the girls who had tasted money from commercial sex work lost interest in education.
While issuing a warning to parents involved in the vice, the lawmaker those caught risk being arrested.
“We are working with the ministry of Gender and the Social Welfare department trying to track the women involved. We already have reliable information and we will be carrying at least two raids per week in the area so as to curb this vice,” he said.
